ICHTHYOLOGY
THE STUDY OF FISH
Fish are a familiar and timeless subject, dating back 400 million years, when marine vertbrates first appeared in the fossil record. Ichthyology (meaning the study of fish) is a series of iconic images by Giles Revell, inspired by the beauty of the primitive anatomy of fish.
The imagery sets out to illuminate the astonishing hidden worlds of these familiar organisms, through the fusion of art, technology, and scientific investigation. Devoid of iridescent scales and flesh, structures are laid bare and a forensic viewpoint explored, using X-ray technology.
The natural design of bone and cartilage is presented exquisitely, like an etching or diagrammatic pencil drawing, transformed through the careful inversion of the radiograph. The work is inspired by a fascination for palaeontology and natural history and concentrates on several recognisable species, discovering an extraordinary perspective through the process. The Ray (raja clavata) radiograph is a beautiful example, revealing remarkable anatomy, that has ancestry dating back 200 million years to the Jurassic Period, when sharks and rays first evolved.
Further works are planned in this series.
